Ohh.. The thaugts I thought I thank when I thank while reading.

1. Copy (including titles and authors) five quotes from any five different fiction works (novels and short stories) by American authors that you have read (including at least two things we've read for this class this year). After each, include a short paragraph of your commentary on it.

  • Life on the Mississippi- Mark Twain- "Oh, don't say anymore, please! Have I got to learn the shape of the river according to all these five hundred thousand different ways? If I tied to carry all that cargo in my head it would make me stoop-shouldered."

This only supports the idea that Mississippi citizens are all ignorant red-necks. Yes, i know memorizing every turn and slope in the Mississippi River is nearly impossible, but couldn't he have used some other type of metaphor. For instance... I can't memorize all of that, my diminutive brain to handle.

  • The Crucible-Arthur Miller- "Excellency, it is not enough he confess himself. Let him sign it, let him sign it."

In The Crucibles everyone is sought out to find who is a with, or who is possessed by the devil. It get to the point where everyone realizes that their was no puppet of the devil or witch to begin with, but the did not want to risk looking stupid.. so they decided to pin it on a quit large number o civilians who had nothing to do with the situation at hand. The were despite enough to hole a family (mother, in which was pregnant,) and treating their lives so that they would "confess" to their crime, so that the dilemma would be discontinued.

  • Blue Highways- William Least Heat-Moon- "Had it not been raining hard that morning on Livingston square, I never would have learned of Nameless, Tennessee."
This quote shows a message that things happen for a reason. God, or whom ever you believe in has a purpose for things that happen, good and bad. It all depends on the way we take it. This man could have easily had a why me attitude, and stormed into the restaurant in a rampage, but he is more civilized than that, now isn't he. Unlike most of out economy.

  • Black Boy-Richard Wright- "I sensed that she was teasing me and it made me angry."
I came across a point of parents leaving important information as a surprise. I don't know whether it is for their entertainment, maybe they have no form of a life and enjoy the misery of small children, but if the info must be told, TELL IT!! If your taking a boat trip, then tell your son what is about to happen.

  • Game-Donald Barthelme- "I point out to Shotwell that two can derive more enjoyment from playing jacks than one, but he is not interested."
One should not do anything by themselves that they can do with friends. Having friends builds personality and character. Being a loner only lowers your self esteem. If one wants to enjoy life than make every activity a multi-player experience. Even if it is playing jacks. If you live life alone, than a lonely life you'll receive. Shotwell should have taken a shot and well.. let his friends play with him to start with.

2. Copy (including titles and authors) five quotes from any five different non-fiction works (speeches, essays, etc.) by American authors that you have read (including at least two things we've read for this class this year). After each, include a short paragraph of your commentary on it.

  • Soldier's Home-Ernest Hemingway- "By the time Krebs returned to his home town in Oklahoma the greeting of heroes was over. He acme back much too late."
World War on returns were viewed as a time of excitement and celebration, and when Krebs came back home he was brought upon nothingness. Any once war activist should have a welcome home, no matter what time the return home. If they had the grapes to serve in the war, then should have at least a pat in the back and a cupcake. Let them who serve be served.

  • Son-John Updike- "He would be a better father than his father. But time has tricked him, has made him a son."
Every parents wants the best for their child. No responsible parent wants a bad life for their child, and everyone goes through their childhood, and wants it too end. Children always feel that they will be a better parents, spoiling their kids, never beating them, etc. But we all know that, that never turns out that way. We try our best but childhood should always be spent not thinking of the future, but thinking of today.

  • Speaking of Courage- Tim O'Brien- "The war was over, and there was no place in particular to go."
I could sense a sign of relief from this veteran. A war is a place of tough time, and home-sick-itis. To come home with a sign of relief, means you went through times. On the ride home I can imagine the thoughts that ran trough their heads. Going to se their family, who is not going to be there, what changed, what is the first thing I want to do, are just some examples of what they could be thinking. War is a game. A game for big boys.

  • Night- Elie Wiesel- "She continued to scream, breathless, her voice broken by sobs."
This is an example of the how the people of Jewish religion sulfured. Why is it that if you're not one of them, than they want you dead. No one should ever have to endure what they did, and I am glad they have made a filthy rich name for themselves. The evil and hate that must impulse through anyones systems to act this way, is inhumanely. The fact that this event took place in our history is disgusting!! May the devil have no mercy on their souls.

  • Dust Tracks on a Road-Zora Neale Hurston- "A Negro school was something strange to them, and while they were always sympathetic and kind, curiosity must have been present. also."
While the Caucasians came down to visit, they had to act on their best behavior, because the Negroids look up to us, was a proper attitude back in the day. I'm glad to see the changes that others have taken to make sure that we treat everyone equally. Everyone deserves the same chances, the same education that anyone receives. If we were to live in a 80 years ago.. then I wouldn't have to be writing this blog that you see before you today. Aren't we both lucky!!
  • A Mystery of Heroism-Stephen Crane- "We ain't dyin' yet of thirst, are we? That's foolishness."
This quote shows the fear that ran through the soldiers as they were in war. The constant thought of dieing, made them insane. To go through war is to go through hell. Every step you take is a step towards possible death. Only the toughest men could go through war unchanged. If war were to end... insaneness would no longer commence. Let us stop war to say brain cells, they're low enough in number as is.

3. Copy (including titles and authors) five quotes from any five different works of poetry by American authors that you have read (including at least two things we've read for this class this year). After each, include a short paragraph of your commentary on it.

  • The Explorer- Gwendolyn Brooks- "A room of wily hush somewhere within."
I feel that this line is a representation of how every hard working person wants that one room to themselves. The room that puts them in complete tranquility. A room where they can rest an concentrate on their opinions, and take time to basks on their accomplishments. A room that is unreachable in our reality. Their Dream Room.
  • Richard Cory- Edwin Arlington Robinson- "In fine, we thought he was everything."
This quote bring to mind the saying, " don't judge a book by its cover." The citizens of the community had a perspective of this man being, somewhat perfect, yet in reality he was living a miserable life. It's like the one person that you wish to be like, or just plainly be. You know the rich man/woman with the attractive wife, and the cornucopia of money, but what you don;t see is how miserable they can be.
  • De Witt Williams on his way to Lincoln Cemetery- Gwendolyn Brooks- "Born in Alabama. Bred in Illinois. He was nothing but a plain black boy."
I found this stanza to be offensive, until I read the rest of the poem. A boy is a boy no matter what color he is, but this boy was just a boy, and he deserved to live. No matter race or parents, or even place of conception, does a child deserve fatality deception. If that makes any sense.

  • America- Claude McKay- "Although she feeds me bread if bitterness,"
This shows how America will give the nothing but a horrible life time at one moment, but as you can clearly see it leads to over all happiness. That is if you fall in the luck category, or Caucasian category. Just a little joke. But American is beautiful, America is great, if you not getting love from her you're probably getting hate, but no worries there pal, it will soon come. If on;y for a while.

  • Incident-Countee Cullen- [And so I smiled, but he poked out his tounge, and called me "Nigger."]
This was a incident that effects our culture still today. With racial, slurs and predigest running about, children should not have to go thought these types of "Incidents." When will we finally end this racial hate? When will it all stop? Can't everyone get along? Only if they're smoking pot. (Another joke.)

4. Copy (including titles and authors) five quotes from any five different sources, about whatever single topic you want (happiness, humor, love, family, music, death, etc.) They need not be from this class, or even American at all. After each, include a short paragraph of your commentary on it. Be sure to label this entry with your subject.

5. Copy (including titles and authors) five quotes from any ONE author you like. They need not be from this class, or even American at all. After each, include a short paragraph of your commentary on it.

A Rose For Emily-William Faulkner
  • "The body had apparently once lain in the altitude of an embrace."
  • "Then we noticed in the second pillow was the indention of a head."
  • "I want some poison,"
  • "They'll kill anything up to an elephant."
These five quotes show how crazy Emily was. If she has the ability to buy some poison, give it to her lover to kill him, and then sleep with him... then she is straight up, no lie loony. I would hate to be in a relationship were i was not aloud to leave. It is basically holding someone hostage! Love is a thing that everyone is looking for, but too much love, as read in this story, is DANGEROUS!!! Though some what funny, in these sense of this happening to someone else, if it is happening to you, I guarantee that you will be crying. No joke.
